Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Being a single girl Scott was also raised with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she enrolled in Temple University. She studied secondary education over there while working two jobs. Her goal was to be an high school English teacher. Her dream to become a high-school English teacher, was cut short after she dropped out of high school. Her first job was as a spoken-word artist who performed her own works at live poetry readings and eventually linked up to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They ended up collaborating and co-writing You Got Me. In Roots' show, she revealed herself to be an artist. Afterward she secured collaborations with musicians such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. Also, she was performers on The Canada stage of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was contracted by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
